A friend pointed out an amusing typo on the Walker Art Center’s site. They’ve accidentally attributed the films of their upcoming “Inside India: Bollywood and Beyond” series to Japanese director Takashi Miike. He happens to be a master of gory horror, not of song-and-dance spectaculars. In fact, at the international film fest premiere of Miike’s “Ichi the Killer“, barf bags were distributed to audience members. I doubt they’ll be needed at Bollywood and Beyond. The glory for these films should go to Tamil director Mani Ratnam, whose stylistic sensibilities are much different from Miike’s. All films in the series are regional premieres, and each sounds intriguing in its own right. From the title of “A Tale of a Naughty Girl” to the “epic journey of peace activism in the face of global militarism and war” in “War and Peace” and the inspired adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility in “I Have Found It“. Hopefully I’ll be able to catch one or two of these fine films.
