I love being an at-home mom, more than anything really, but something’s got to give. And soon. My unemployment is running out some time next month and we, unfortunately, can’t live off of the husband’s current income. I spend a good chunk of each morning looking for work for myself, and/or for him. But it’s slim pickings out there. The state’s job site turns up titles like “Greenhouse Grower”, “Japanese Language Instructor” or “Rational Robot Trainer”…positions that we’re not so uniquely unqualified for. Say what you want about the man, but when Clinton was in office no one I knew had trouble finding work. These days everyone is struggling…to hang on to what they’ve got, or to find something, anything to make ends meet. We’re vying for jobs we were overqualified for a decade ago, and still finding that we’re one of one hundred or more applicants when we give it a go. So color me discouraged. At least the afternoon was productive. With a little help from my friends I was able to get together the materials I needed (we’ve really got to get our printer working) to apply for a job that I have nearly no chance of getting. And they provided a safehaven for us that the little man is comfortable in. Dragging the lad to Kinko’s, or to the free but sketchy state workforce center, to print off and fill out said materials wouldn’t have been nearly as pleasant of an experience. Plus we got some free chocolate cupcake out of the deal, and I snapped off a number of photos along the way.
