It seems endless. The bad news and tragedies. Synagogue murders in Pittsburgh. The caravan of weary asylum seekers who should be welcomed but are being vilified and reviled instead. Global politics are in the gutter with Brazil electing their own Trump-like leader. Around the world horrible people in power are testing the limits, pushing to see how much they can get away with. While citizens aren’t pushing back enough. I get it. I feel overwhelmed and powerless. The rich continue to get richer and sustain their upward trajectory by widening the gap between rich and poor. They ensure we’re all struggling to maintain what little we’ve got, and pitting us against one another. It seems to be working. I admire friends who have been out campaigning, going door to door for the candidates they believe in. I haven’t had the energy to do that but my son and I did head down to the early voting center yesterday. Beforehand we reviewed our sample ballot together and discussed the candidates. He turned 18 before election day 2017 and voted then, but this election has much higher stakes. It is pretty wild to think I have raised a child to adulthood. And that I raised one who takes his civic duties seriously. And heck, early voting is much less stressful. He’s the one who made the excellent point that he didn’t want to rush around before or after school on Tuesday. I do enjoy the excitement of the neighborhood polling place on election day but not the time crunch.
Five good non-election related things:
- Last weekend a friend got us tickets to the preview of the new exhibit at the MIA, Egypt’s Sunken Cities. It is seriously amazing. Especially the hippopotamus goddess sculpture. There will be a few opportunities for people to see the exhibit for free coming up. November 15th for their Third Thursdays event and again on the day after Thanksgiving. I would much rather be wandering around a museum than a mall on Black Friday.
- I was lucky enough to see incredible live performances two nights in a row. Thursday I saw harmonizing trio Mountain Man deliver a goosebump inducing set at The Cedar. Friday night I saw my all-time favorite band, Low, perform at The Fitzgerald. At both shows performers mentioned having breakfast at Modern Times and now I’ve had their “Not Your Mother’s Migas” on my mind for days.
- Massive Attack Announce Mezzanine Anniversary Tour With Cocteau Twins’ Liz Fraser. Their “personalised nostalgia nightmare head trip†tours North America and Europe in 2019. Hell yes to this. Before their US dates were announced I was planning a trip to Portugal to catch this show but I can’t really afford it so it’s for the best they’re coming to the Twin Cities after all. And it’s a decent venue too but nowhere near as cool as the one they’re performing at in Lisbon.
- The Grimes and Poppy collab is as _____ as you’d expect
- I’m not a huge horror fan but I do enjoy a good movie soundtrack/score and I absolutely LOVE this man: ‘Hereditary’ Horror: an interview with composer Colin Stetson
