The winter weather persists, as it does in this neck of the woods. I miss my daily outdoor walks. Even when the temperatures are warm enough, the sidewalks around here are garbage. Unfortunately, our small condo doesn’t have room for a treadmill. I’ve wondered if it’s time for me to become an early morning mall walker. I desperately need more exercise.
Other things on my mind:
- My son and I watched the most stunning animated film. It was stressful at times, during the mountaineering scenes, but gripping and totally worth the watch: Netflix’s intense animated manga adaptation The Summit of the Gods is a literal trip
- This article by Maeve Higgins brought me to tears. “Tell everyone on this train I love them”: the meaning of a hero’s final words. I’m currently reading her book that uses that message as its title. Oof.
- Their Bionic Eyes Are Now Obsolete and Unsupported: Second Sight left users of its retinal implants in the dark. A friend and I were discussing this piece. She remarked, “the road to bionic everything is going to be paved with these failures, I’m afraid it’s going to get pretty gruesome.” I’m afraid she’s right.
- I haven’t written here about the most recent murder of a Black man by Minneapolis police, but I’ve been thinking about it. A lot. “After Amir Locke Police Killing, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey Should Resign: In this op-ed, a Minneapolis City Council member argues that it’s time for Jacob Frey to resign and for a new Department of Public Safety to replace the Minneapolis Police Department.” Our coward of a mayor has got to go and I am so deeply disappointed in my fellow residents who voted for him.
- Best tweet I’ve seen in a while: Dolly Parton is one of the 3 most efficient governments on Earth right now after an announcement about Dollywood taking care of their employees by paying for all tuition costs, fees, and books for employees who pursue higher education.
Last summer one of my favorite artists commented on a pic of our chonk, Fred, asking if she could paint him. Of course! I enjoy her art so much I had one of her pieces tattooed on my shoulder. I’d forgotten all about the cat pic until she tagged me the other day. The painting is done and prints are up for sale. Naturally, I bought one.
