Cuts You Up

It’s been a tough Spring and Summer. The personal and the political. The current state of the world is the worst it’s been in my lifetime. And we lost our beloved 19 year-old cat, Olive. It’s strange to be cat people without cats. While grieving over her and the ongoing genocide in Gaza and all of the other active injustices, domestic and global, it has been tough to find joy or anything hopeful. But in the last week or so I’ve visited three different homes with six cats. Spending time with them has been soothing.

And these election results have been encouraging:
French voters reject the far-right and in the UK, voters reject Conservative populism.

In other Good Things:

  • Welcome news, via Ned Raggett https://pitchfork.com/staff/ned-raggett/
“Cocteau Twins revamped and updated their YouTube page to finally include all their official videos over the years, in hi-def at that.”
  • There’s a trailer for the new Time Bandits tv series coming to Apple TV this month.
  • There’s also a trailer out for Agatha All Along. I’ll be watching when that premieres September 18th.
  • Season 2 of Severance is finally coming! But not until January 17th.
  • A friend recommended the Netflix series The Tourist. A thriller with comedic moments about an Irishman waking up in an Australian hospital with amnesia. I’d seen it pop up in my recommendations but hadn’t heard any buzz about it. I don’t know why this show is flying under the radar. It’s brilliant! I blew through season 1 and am nearly done with season 2 already. And I want MORE.
  • Lastly, my beloved Newcomers podcast is back with a new season. This time it isn’t covering one franchise or one director, but the broader category of legendary sports movies. And it’s off to a great start with White Men Can’t Jump!

I’ve been following some feline rescues on instagram. I’m nearly ready to visit some adoptable cats but my kid isn’t quite ready yet. Initially, I agreed that we could wait until after our trip to Japan next Spring. But the notion of enduring a cold Minnesotan Fall and Winter without a cat companion is too bleak. We’ll revisit the topic in a couple of months.
